Cake rewind to the 1940’s to launch the UK’s biggest youth action scheme vinvolved

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

The Cake crew are going back in time tonight as we’re all off to the V Day Ballroom Blitz. The girls will be sliding some nylons over their silky smooth thighs and the boys will be sneaking peeks from under their Trilbys!

Why you may ask? Well the youth volunteering agency v are launching 150 new volunteering projects for 16 – 25 year olds. Setting out to prove that volunteering is not only fun and a great way to improve your life and work skills, v are also thanking their innovative and creative community of existing volunteers with one almighty party that’s going to be rocking the Bloomsbury Ballroom in London tonight until the early hours.

The Enemy and rising stars The Rumble Strips, The Thirst and Martina Topley Bird amongst many others will be performing at tonight’s event and we’re pretty sure that everyone there will be getting the message that the 1940’s community spirit is still very much alive with young people today!

Along with agreeing to headline this free party, The Enemy recently chose to join one of the vinvolved projects and planted trees in South London to brighten up the residents urban spaces…. Tonight Malcolm they will definitely be brightening up Cake’s urban faces! ;-)

Check out www.vinspired.com to find out about projects in your area as well as a footage, photographs and exclusive band interviews.

Carling Supports Sheffield

Monday, April 21st, 2008

The opening of a new Carling Academy is always a cause for celebration, which is why we rolled out a special version of Carling Supports specially for Sheffield, home of the newest Academy.

Carling Supports was successfully launched on a national level in 2007 and gives unsigned bands a chance to taste fame and fortune by playing at their nearest Carling Academy. They can also gain a supporting slot for a headline act in the venue.

To celebrate the opening of the Sheffield Academy, we ran a localised version called Carling Supports Sheffield. The aim was to raise awareness of the venue among local bands, music lovers, on trade outlets and the media.

Over one hundred bands from all across Yorkshire entered the competition, with hopes of being on the first bill of Carling Academy 2 Sheffield. Sixteen bands were chosen to perform at showcases in pubs and bars across the city, where they played to an independent panel of judges. Standards were high throughout, with a wide variety of music styles on show. Plans to choose four finalists proved impossible; a slight bending of the rules made the decision a little easier and five top quality acts made it through to the main event.

Shot Dead, The Magi, Tiananmen, Vegas Child and Silent Film Project rocked the 400 strong crowd with music ranging from indie pop, through rock and punk, to heavy metal, with each band bringing a different sound to the evening. Having over 400 fans turn up to an unsigned music showcase highlights the health of the Sheffield music scene and the quality of the acts that played on the evening; it’s great for Carling to now be part of it.

In the Oven with… Katy McCormack

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Wecome to another installment of ‘In the Oven’. This time it’s Katy, the beam of sunshine behind the Cake reception…

My philosophy in life is to be happy and to live life to the max, and to treat others the way you would like to be treated.

My dream man is Johnny Depp

If I could have anyone as a guest at my dinner party it would be Morgan Freeman or Paul O’Grady

Something nobody else knows about me is I love doing puzzles and I love Disney films

I know I’m tired when I get grumpy or when my eyes look a normal size instead of the size of an owl’s

My guilty pleasure is listening to Whitney Houston’s ‘I wanna dance with somebody’ and dancing round my lounge

My favourite member of Girls Aloud is Kimberley

If I could be in any soap I would be in Eastenders, so I could eat a bacon butty in the cafe and have a pint in the Queen Vic

The best celeb I’ve met is Mike Reid (Frank Butcher)

If I were prime minister the first thing I would do is bring back the lethal injection, make everyone own deoderant and use it

The king of mid afternoon snacks is I sit on my own so I couldn’t say, but when I have treats at my desk everyone appears

I’m anyones when they give me £5 million and some chocolate

I want to be sick when someone is sick, or when I smell BO

Best quote I have ever heard is Live life to the full and have no regrets as you never know what’s round the corner

My favourite thing about life at Cake is the little chats with different people and the drinks on a Friday, and having a different challenge everyday

A Monster hangover

Monday, April 14th, 2008

It’s Monday. The weekend is over. We’re all feeling a bit worse for wear.

No one likes Mondays (not sure why Bob Geldoff thought he was so special), it is the dark at the end of the tunnel, the wart that plagues our beautiful weekends. However, I think we may have found a cure.

Monster is the second biggest energy drink in the US and it has just arrived in the UK. One can of this tonic will have you fired up and ready to kick the crap out of the day in no time. Also, unlike with some energy drinks, you don’t get the crash in the afternoon that makes you want to kill yourself!

Teams of Monster people are currently touring the country in Monster trucks, introducing people to the brand and so far it has been going down a storm with extreme sports lovers, office workers and builders alike.

So, if you’re hankering after that Friday feeling on a Monday morning, don’t worry, the answer will be in your local shop/pub soon.
