Putting on the Pounds

Monday, November 12th, 2007

ITV’s Katie Derham is literally putting on the pounds for ‘The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway’ - £50,000 to be precise! The national news anchor and TV presenter has announced the details for the ITV programme by dressing up in some of the £50 million Lottery cash she will soon help to give-away.

This may have been one of Cake’s most unusual photoshoots to date. When the idea was put forward about creating a dress made literally out of £50,000 it sounded like sheer madness!! But at Cake we don’t shy away from crazy ideas and set about planning the logistics for the shoot. The dress took three days to create and two security guards were drafted in to keep watch over the cash 24 hours day. By the time we’d finished, the dress had 1800 notes on it - including 1,348 x £50’s, 1,348 x £20’s and 48 x £5’s and 800 £1 coins!

On the day of the shoot Katie arrived and put on the dress for the first time, as you can see from the picture she looked a million dollars - well almost! Katie said of the dress - “I felt completely fabulous wearing such a special dress and couldn’t believe it had been made especially for me – it fitted like a glove. The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway is an amazing campaign that the whole country can get behind - it gives the public a chance to say where they want their Lottery money spent – so what are you waiting for check out the People’s Millions website and get voting!”

The contest for the BIG Lottery Fund’s £50 million funding will be screened on ITV1 between 3 and 7 December, with four projects of national importance vying for public support. The winner will walk away with the biggest-ever cash award of Lottery good cause money to be decided through a nationwide vote. The People’s 50 million Lottery contest is the single biggest grant awarded by the BIG Lottery Fund to be decided by the public.

The Royal Marines eat Cake for breakfast

Friday, November 9th, 2007

The Royal Marines are one of the most fearsome military forces in the world. Troops are so highly trained that they can survive anywhere, be it on top of a mountain or in the middle of the desert.

As such, us Cakers were a bit daunted at the prospect of spending a day at their training camp in Devon. After all, your average Marine spends his days doing 30 mile runs, learning extreme survival skills and completing gruelling assault courses, while your average Cake employee spends his/her days eating biscuits, chatting with people and only going outside if there really is no other choice.

When the bus pulled in at the Commando Training Centre we were expecting to be met by a platoon of shouty, sadistic drill sergeants wielding pointy sticks that they would use to prod us in our love handles if we ran too slow. What we were actually met by was a down to earth bunch of lads from all over the country, undergoing an instructor-training programme that would equip them with the skills to take new recruits through the 32-week basic training course all Marines must undergo.

The morning session took place on the endurance course located on the picturesque Woodbury Common. Enjoyment of the beautiful views and local wildlife was hampered by the fact that none of us could see a thing through the mud and tears as we struggled to propel our flabby bodies over hills, around bushes and through pitch-black tunnels, one of which, the infamous ‘sheep dip’ was completely underwater and smelled of poo.

Sheer willpower and encouraging words (not to mention the odd piggy back) from our super-human instructors, got the entire team through the ordeal and back to the barracks for a hearty lunch and a warm feeling of achievement.

Hilarity is not a word normally associated with the Royal Marines but it is the only word that can be used to describe the ‘Hollywood heroes’ themed afternoon session. The sight of an eight foot killing machine dressed as Lara Croft having a chat with a suspiciously masculine looking Supergirl is one that will be etched in our memories forever.

A massive effort had been put into turning the gym into six movie sets from various action films including Tomb Raider, Terminator and Die Hard. The themes were a great way to add an element of fun to what was actually a very intensive circuit training session. It was like It’s a Knockout for tough bastards. The session ended in a Wacky Races style run (complete with cardboard race cars) around the camp, that drove our already exhausted and agonised bodies to the limit.

What a great day! None of us really had the energy to hit the town in the evening, but the Marines weren’t taking no for an answer and took us out to sample the delights of Exeter’s nightlife. After plenty of shots we were fit enough, or numb enough, for some rather energetic dancing – a form of exercise Cake is much more familiar with.

Battered, bruised, aching and more than a little hung over, we have now made it safely back to London where a new challenge faces us – how do you get the stench of ‘sheep dip’ out of your trainers?!

My Facebook Profile? £150 to you, mate

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

He’s only 23, you know. Facebook’s CEO (and owner of your personal data), Marc Zuckerberg

As has been previously noted on our little blog, we love Facebook at Cake. As well as checking our mates’ status updates (obviously only in our lunchtime), sending mail and writing on walls, we’ve also used the social network for campaigns, and are currently building Facebook applications for several of our clients (at a reasonable rate - give us a call if you’re interested in one).

Yet, one thing in the network’s rise to mainstream success that has yet to be noted by most observers, is how much personal data we’ve handed over to Marc Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder. This is the real reason why Facebook is valued so highly - we have created the most comprehensive marketing database of all time, just by all filling in our Facebook profiles.

The actual value of this data may be more than you think. A study by Deutsche Bank recently found that “a newspaper reader in 2004 was worth $964 a year. Today, that’s $500.” US blogger extrodinaire Jeff Jarvis then works out that on this logic we’re worth $300 each to Facebook. Interesting reading - read the full post here.

The final question it posts, is, will we willing to give this data away for free forever? We’re used to selling our shopping habits for reduced grocery bills (loyalty cards) and we get paid for focus groups. Perhaps this is the start of something bigger?

Thanks to Simon Collister for the information for this post.

The Big Lottery Fund

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Yesterday morning a big contingent of Cakers headed over to the Mermaid Conference Centre, to witness the BIG Lottery Fund unveiling the final shortlist for the People’s £50 Million Lottery contest.

The morning saw the Lottery’s Jenni Falconer selecting the successful projects from the actual ‘Thunderball’ Lottery machine. The lucky projects were;

Black Country Urban Park
Eden Project: the Edge
Sherwood: The Living Legend
Sustrans – Connect2

For all details check out the spanking new website www.thepeoples50million.org.uk
The Cake event delivered eight pieces of National TV coverage and National print coverage in The Telegraph, Independent and Metro.

So now we have to wait until December where the public will be given the opportunity to vote for which project they think is worthy of the £50 million prize on the ITV show.
